Caneva, Ernest Oreste

(b Asiago, Italy, Dec 8, 1907; d Joliet, IL, April 4, 1992). American bandmaster and composer of Italian birth. His family came to the United States in 1909 but returned to Italy after his mother’s death in 1918. Caneva studied clarinet, accordion, piano and composition at the Collegio Baggio and the Vicenza Conservatory in Italy. Returning to the United States in 1923, the family settled in Lockport, Illinois. Oreste, now Ernest, studied at VanderCook College (BME 1939, MME 1959), Northwestern and DePaul Universities. He performed in dance bands, operated music studios, composed over 70 published works and served as the Director of Bands at Lockport Township HS (1932–72). The Lockport band appeared at the New York World’s Fair (1940) and Midwest Clinic (1957) and won many awards including the “Music Man Marching Band Contest” in Mason City, IA (1962).
