State-supported university (founded 1860) with a school of music at Baton Rouge. The university introduced music instruction in 1915, and from 1922 offered a BM degree. By the 1980s the department had become the largest music school in the state. In 2009 there were 260 undergraduates studying music history, theory, composition, education, and performance in the schools of music (BM), education (BMEd), and arts and sciences (BA). There were also 235 graduate students in collaborative piano, composition, conducting, music education, musicology, performance, piano pedagogy, and theory (MM); in composition, music education, musicology, and music theory (PhD); and in performance and conducting (DMA). The Troy H. Middleton Library and the music library have record, tape, DVD, and CD collections as well as books and scores, and the archives and manuscripts division house important music-related documents.
