(b Price, UT, May 3, 1937). American music educator, music therapist, and scholar. He was director of instrumental music in the Helper City, Utah schools (1955–7), and received two degrees from Brigham Young University (BA 1957, MA 1960). He joined the faculty (1961) and completed a PhD (1963) at Florida State University, where he continues as Coordinator of Music Education/Music Therapy/Contemporary Media (1977–) and Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of Music (1988–). He published Experimental Research in Music (Englewood Cliffs, 1970) and Teaching/Discipline: a Positive Approach for Educational Development (Boston, 1970), both co-authored with his brother, Charles H. Madsen, Jr., Contemporary Music Education (with Terry Kuhn, Arlington Heights, 1978), and Competency-Based Music Education (with Cornelia Yarbrough, Englewood Cliffs, 1978).
