(b Burlington, IA, March 1, 1893; d Shaker Heights, OH, June 12, 1952). American music educator. He received degrees from Northwestern University (BM, MM 1915). He served as supervisor of music in the Highland Park, Illinois public schools (1915–16) and director of music at State Teachers College in La Crosse, Wisconsin (1916–20), from which he took leave to serve as an army bandmaster in France and Germany (1918–19). He was a supervisor of music for the Cleveland Public Schools (1920–23, 1923–52), chairman of the Music Department at the Cleveland School of Education (1922–9), taught at Western Reserve University (1929–36), and was an organist at Old Stone Church in Cleveland (1923–50).
