State university, founded in Eugene in 1876. It is the oldest of the state’s seven institutions of higher education. Music became a professional school in 1886 and remained independent and self-supporting until 1915. Dance was founded in 1959 and merged into the School of Music and Dance in 1991. The school offers the BA and BS in music and dance, MFA, MA, and MS in dance, and BMus, MMus, DMA, and PhD in music, with strengths in music and dance performance, music education, historiography, and theory. In 2008–9, the school enrolled about 260 undergraduate and 140 graduate music students, and 55 undergraduate and 10 dance graduate students. There were 44 full-time and 22 part-time music faculty members, and 7 full-time and 6 part-time dance faculty. The present facilities were constructed in 1921, enlarged in 1950 and 1978, and renovated along with a major addition in 2009. The facilities include a 550-seat concert hall that houses one of the largest instruments of German organ builder Jürgen Ahrend. The main library of the university houses the substantial music collection (28,000 books and 51,000 manuscripts), musical Oregoniana, special collections, and 26,000 items of sheet music of the period ...
