(b Humacao, PR, November 2, 1936). Puerto Rican cellist and arts administrator. She began her music studies in Puerto Rico at an early age with her uncle Rafael Montañez. At age 14 and in the company of Montañez, she first met cellist Pablo Casals in France at the Prades Festival. She studied cello with Lieff Rosanoff at the Mannes College of Music, and in 1954 she began lessons with Casals in Prades. In 1957 she returned to Puerto Rico and married Casals. Along with her husband, she assisted with the establishment of the Casals Festival and the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, and in 1959 the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. She continued as co-chairperson of the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico for a few years after the death of her husband in 1973.
