State university with campuses in Boulder, Denver, and Colorado Springs. The main campus at Boulder was founded in 1876. In 1892 music was established as a department in the College of Liberal Arts, later named the College of Arts and Sciences (1920). The College of Music was established and began offering a bachelor of music degree in 1920, adding a master’s degree in 1937. The college became a member of the National Association of Schools of Music in 1941, and all of its programs were accredited by 1944. The college eventually added a DMA in performance (1953), a PhD in music education (1964), and a PhD in musicology (1966). In 2008 it enrolled approximately 350 undergraduate and 200 graduate students in seven degree programs and 23 fields of study, and employed approximately 60 full-time and 25 part-time faculty. The American Music Research Center (AMRC), housed in the Macky Auditorium building, supports the exploration and preservation of American music. The Howard B. Waltz Music Library, located in the Imig Music Building, contains over 150,000 books, scores, periodicals, and recordings and provides support for the specialized collections of the AMRC.
