(b Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 22, 1943). Brazilian musician, producer, and arranger, active in the USA. Deodato began his musical career on the accordion at the age of 12, and soon expanded to piano, orchestration, and conducting. He was part of the second generation of bossa nova musicians in Rio de Janeiro. He worked as composer and arranger for artists at Odeon records and recorded his own music in 1964. He was on the 1967 selection committee for the International Song Festival (FIC) in Brazil, and encouraged Milton Nascimento to enter, effectively launching his career. Deodato emigrated from Brazil to the United States in 1967 due to the Brazilian military dictatorship. His 1974 album Prelude featured a jazz-funk version of the “Einleitung” from Richard Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra.
