Hoffman, Mary (Jane Eckert)

(b Reading, PA, Oct 18, 1926; d Urbana, IL, March 18, 1997). American music educator. She earned degrees from Lebanon Valley College (BA 1948) and Columbia University Teachers College (MA 1951). She taught in urban public schools in Delaware (1948–9, 1952–4), Pennsylvania (1949–51), and Connecticut (1951–2), and held music supervisor positions in Philadelphia (1954–9) and Milwaukee (1959–70). She spent the remainder of her career on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1972–96). Hoffman was on the Wisconsin Music Educators Association Board of Directors (1963–7) and held several leadership positions with the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), among them North Central Division president (1974–6), Executive Director Search Committee chair (1976), and national president (1980–82). MENC established the Society for General Music and Society for Music Teacher Education and celebrated its 75th anniversary during her presidency.
