Humphreys, Jere T(homas)

(b Humboldt, TN, March 26, 1949). American music educator and scholar. Humphreys earned degrees in music education from the University of Mississippi (BM 1971) and University of Michigan (PhD 1984), and in clarinet performance from Florida State University (MM 1976). He taught music in Mississippi public schools (1971–5), and at Huntingdon College (1977–9), West Virginia University (1981–7), and Arizona State University (1987–). He is a Senior Fulbright Scholar (2002) and the recipient of several awards, including the Citation of Excellence in Research (1985) and the Senior Researcher Award (2006) from the Music Educators National Conference (MENC). He has been an Academic Specialist for the US Department of State (1996) and an investigator in projects funded by the European Union and the National Endowment for the Arts. He has been a featured speaker, visiting professor, endowed chair resident, or consultant in twenty-nine countries, and has advised graduate students at home and abroad on numerous dissertations and theses, several of which won university or national awards.
