Kirk, Colleen (Jean)

(b Champaign, IL, Sept 7, 1918; d Paxton, IL, March 5, 2004). American teacher, author, and conductor. She received degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (BME 1940, MM 1945) and Teachers College, Columbia University (EdD 1953). She began her career teaching band, chorus, and general music in the public schools of Danvers, Illinois (1940–44). Although her teaching career in public schools and universities spanned over 50 years, she developed her skills and expertise for choral music through church involvement, primarily at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Champaign, Illinois. She eventually received a Minister of Music Certificate from the United Methodist Church (1945). In 1949 Kirk joined the music education faculty at the University of Illinois, where she taught music education courses, supervised student teachers, and became known for her great care and devoted mentoring of students.
