Wytko, Joseph (Rudolph)

(b Morgantown, WV, May 19, 1949). American saxophonist and teacher. He studied at West Virginia University (BME 1971) and Northwestern University (MM 1974, DM 1985). He taught at Arizona State University (1975–2007), where he served as chair of the Music Performance Division for six years and as a member of the Honors Disciplinary Faculty of Barrett Honors College (2006–7). He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota, Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris, Conservatoire de Darius Milhaud (Paris), and Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussels. Wytko has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, International Research and Exchanges Board (Senior Scholar Grant), and MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music at Bowling Green State University. He has presented recitals at Carnegie Recital Hall, San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre, East Room of the White House (1993), and many European venues. He has performed as a soloist with the Pittsburgh and Phoenix Symphony Orchestras, orchestras in Europe and Mexico, and as an orchestral saxophonist with the Chicago and Grant Park Orchestras. Wytko has recorded on the Brewster, ACA Digital, Orion Master Recording, and TimeGrabber Digital labels.
