(b Hamilton, Ont., Apr 17, 1856; d New York, Sept 16, 1949). Canadian pianist and music educator. Chittenden began piano study as a child and completed her formal musical education at Hellmuth College in London, Ontario. At age 17, she began teaching at the same institution. In 1876, Chittenden relocated to New York and pursued a career as a teacher and organist, notably at the Calvary Baptist Church, where she served from 1879 to 1906. She took a position at the Catherine Aiken School in Connecticut in 1890 and remained there as head of the piano division until 1914. In 1898 she began her long-standing association with Vassar College, where she was head of the piano department and an assistant professor from 1918 until her retirement in 1930.
