[Arthur Murray Teichman]

(b New York, April 4, 1895; d Honolulu, March 3, 1991). American ballroom dance instructor and businessman. A shy youth, he discovered a facility for ballroom dancing in high school. After studying with Vernon and Irene Castle, he went to work for them as an instructor in their studio and at a resort hotel in North Carolina. Moving to Georgia in 1919, he enrolled in Georgia Tech to study business administration while continuing to give dance lessons at Atlanta’s premier hotels. His studies led him to develop a successful mail-order business selling printed dance instructions with follow-the-footsteps diagrams of floor patterns. When this business declined, he returned to New York City and opened a large dance studio on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. In 1925 he married his favorite dancing partner, Kathryn Kohnfelder, and made her his business partner. Thanks to their commercial acumen, effective advertising, well-trained teachers, and fun-filled studio parties, the studio prospered and eventually became the flagship of a worldwide chain of several hundred franchised schools....
