(b Salvador, Brazil, March 29, 1940). Brazilian singer), active in the United States. Astrud Evangelina Weinert moved with her family from Salvador (Bahia) to Rio de Janeiro in 1947. In 1959, she married bossa nova musician João Gilberto. During the recording sessions with João Gilberto, Stan Getz, and Antônio Carlos Jobim for the 1964 album Getz/Gilberto, the musicians realized that they needed someone to sing in English. She sang the English words to many of the tracks to complement her husband’s Portuguese vocals. For the radio edit of “The Girl from Ipanema,” producer Creed Taylor removed João Gilberto’s vocals leaving only Astrud’s delicate voice. The song became a huge success. She immigrated to the United States in 1963 and divorced João Gilberto by the mid-1960s. She has had an active recording career and appeared in two Hollywood films. Her soft vocal timbre defines bossa nova for many listeners around the world....
