(b New York, NY, May 12, 1966). Brazilian singer, active in the United States. She was born to Brazilian bossa nova musician João Gilberto and his second wife, the singer Miúcha, while they were living in New York City. Her uncle is the Brazilian songwriter Chico Buarque. She spent much of her childhood traveling and sometimes performing with her parents. Bebel began recording her own music while living in Rio de Janeiro in 1986. In the 1990s, she established herself in New York City and began to record guest vocals for such artists as David Byrne, Kenny G, and the down-tempo electronica duo Thievery Corporation. She joined Béco Dranoff’s Ziriguiboom imprint of Crammed Records and collaborated with Mitar (“Suba”) Subotić and Amon Tobin for her label debut, Tanto Tempo (2000). The album established her as the leader of a new generation of electronica-tinged bossa nova singers. It eventually became one of the world’s best-selling albums by a Brazilian artist.
