- Durrell Bowman
(b New York, 15 April 1948; d London, 18 Nov 2003). American film composer, orchestral arranger, conductor, oboist, horn player, and keyboardist. The son of a dentist and a teacher, Kamen attended the High School of Music & Art with classmates the singer-songwriter Janis Ian and fellow future film composer Mark Snow (b Martin Fulterman). He then attended the Juilliard School alongside Leonard Slatkin and played the oboe under Jean Morel. With Fulterman and the cellist-composer Dorian Rudnytsky he formed the rock/classical fusion band the New York Roll & Roll Ensemble, which performed in 1967 as Janis Ian’s backing ensemble, played in 1969 in Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts with the New York PO at Lincoln Center, and made a series of albums from 1968 to 1972.
