American vocal ensemble. Often referred to as “an orchestra of voices,” Chanticleer is one of America’s most recognized vocal chamber ensembles. Chanticleer was originally founded by tenor Louis Botto in 1978 to perform medieval and renaissance music. The ensemble’s first major tour was launched in 1981. Since then they have toured extensively throughout the United States, performing in every state in the union. Their first European success came in 1984 when they performed in Belgium at the International Josquin Symposium. Throughout its lengthy tenure as one of America’s premier music groups, Chanticleer’s repertoire has continually expanded to include a wider variety of music, such as jazz, spirituals, and contemporary music.
Chanticleer released their first recording under their independent record label Chanticleer Records in 1987. They released ten albums under this label until they began to record with Teldec Records in 1994. Their recordings have garnered great critical and commercial success.
