American oboist and record executive. Peter Christ is well known for his role as the founder of the Westwood Wind Quintet, which formed in 1959 and continues to perform and record today. His many accomplishments include recording the Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.1 with John Mack at the Marlboro Music Festival in 1964, under the direction of Pablo Casals; serving as principal oboist with the San Diego Symphony, San Francisco Ballet, and California Chamber Symphony; and recording with film studio orchestras. In 1966 he founded his own recording label, Crystal Records, which features world-class artists recording repertory not often spotlighted by the major labels. Its important early releases include solo and chamber music recordings by American oboist John Mack, tuba player Roger Bobo, and violist Yizhak Schotten, as well as many orchestral recordings of the music of Hovhaness. The label has also released many of Christ’s solo albums and numerous recordings by the Westwood Wind Quintet, including the complete quintets of Anton Reicha.
