Collins, Walter (Wally) Stowe, II

American choral conductor and scholar. He attended the prominent Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut. A gifted student, Collins received a Bachelor’s degree (1948) and Master’s degree (1951) from Yale University and a second Master’s degree (1955) and the doctorate (1960) from the University of Michigan. At Yale, he sang in the famed Whiffenpoofs, which fostered his interest in American college singing groups and their music. His compilation of college songs, The Walter S. Collins Collection, is housed in the American Music Research Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he served as Professor and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies from 1971–88.
