(b Eagle Pass, TX, Dec 25, 1923). American conductor. He studied composition with kent Kennan at the University of Texas (BMus 1943), with Bernard Rogers at the Eastman School (MMus 1947), and with bohuslav Martinů at the Berkshire Music Center (1946), where he later studied opera with Sarah Caldwell (1950). Since winning the Cleveland Orchestra’s competition for apprentice conductors in 1947 and serving as assistant conductor (1956), associate, and resident conductor (1956–73), he has held positions with the Akron (Ohio) SO (1959–83), the Dallas SO (1973–8), and the Atlanta Symphony (1977–88); he has also appeared as guest conductor with major orchestras throughout the United States and in the former USSR, Poland, Finland, South Africa, Uruguay, Mexico, and Canada (where he made his international debut in 1960 with Glenn Gould at the Vancouver International Festival).
