Grandmaster Flash [Saddler, Joseph]

(b Bridgetown, Barbados, Jan 1, 1958). American hip-hop DJ of Barbadian birth. Sadler, nicknamed “Flash” for his speed at the turntables, began to DJ as a teenager, and set out to build a sound system to match that of pioneering hip-hop DJ Kool Herc and disco dj Pete “DJ” Jones. As a student at Samuel Gompers High School, Flash also applied his interest in electronics to dj equipment.
Flash is widely thought to have developed “backspinning,” the process of creating a loop by alternating between two copies of one record on a specific spot, and “phasing,” playing two records at the same spot so that they create a partial phase cancellation. He is a pioneer of Scratching, although Flash’s associate GrandWizzard Theodore (Theodore Livingston; b 1962) is thought to have invented the technique.
