(b Spanish Town, Jamaica, 19 May ?1952). American singer, model, and actress of Jamaican birth. Jones and her siblings were raised in Jamaica by strict Pentecostal grandparents. At the age of 12, she joined her parents in Syracuse, New York, later studying theater and drama at Syracuse University. She signed with Island Records in 1977 and released three critically acclaimed disco albums, Portfolio, Fame, and Muse. Jones then moved in more exploratory directions with Warm Leatherette and Nightclubbing, which contained one of her biggest hits, “Pull Up to the Bumper.” Both albums were collaborations with Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, with whom she again worked on Hurricane (2008) alongside Brian Eno and Tricky. Jones’s performance practice has consistently involved collaborations with visual artists, including Andy Warhol, Jean-Paul Goude, and Keith Haring, and her earlier studies in theater and extensive training as a fashion model have ensured spectacularly visual concert performances characterised by multilayered explorations and subversions of gender, sexual, and racial stereotypes....
