(b Philadelphia, PA, Jan 23, 1977). American composer and DJ. He grew up in Richmond, studying piano and composition, and received his first commission while in high school. He enrolled in the Columbia-Juilliard program, where he worked with JOHN CORIGLIANO, DAVID DEL TREDICI, and SAMUEL ADLER, and earned Bachelor’s degrees in music composition and English literature. He is in the doctoral program at the University of California, Berkeley where he studies with EDMUND CAMPION at the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies.

Active as a performer and as a composer, Bates has earned acclaim in classical concert music and “electronica,” a term that he has used to encompass a variety of techno music. The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella Series at Disney Hall in 2004 premiered his Omnivorous Furniture for sinfonietta and electronica.
