(b Queens, NY, Jan 17, 1953). American jazz bass player. The son of musical parents, he played violin as a child but switched to bass in his early teens (influenced by Jack Bruce) and attended the Berklee College of Music for a time. Berlin’s talent for performing jazz, fusion, and progressive rock came to prominence on a series of album projects with the drummer Bill Bruford’s self-titled group. He has subsequently worked with Bill Frisell, Alan Holdsworth, Yes, John McLaughlin, Arturo Sandoval, Dave Liebman, and kd lang. Berlin has also made a number of recordings as a leader beginning with Motherlode (1985) and including the contemporary mainstream album High Standards (2010). Touring projects have involved his own band, featuring Randy Brecker, Danny Gottlieb, and Othello Molineaux, among others; the group Bx3 with the bass players Stuart Hamm and Billy Sheehan; and a trio with John Abercrombie and Adam Nussbaum in ...
