Circus troupe established in 1984 in Québec City, Québec, Canada. Multinational nouveau circus corporation Cirque du Soleil grew out of “Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul,” a Québecois theater troupe, which had been selected to perform for the 400th anniversary of Cartier’s discovery of Canada. Between 1984 and 1990, Cirque focused on creating a new circus experience, relying heavily upon live music with original scores for continuity. In 2011, the multinational corporation had 22 different shows in operation, selling music soundtracks for each production. This emphasis on music stands in contrast to any other large-scale circus operation, where acrobatics and exhibition of live animals typically take precedence over musical content.
The music for each individual performance varies widely. Three shows are tribute performances that glorify the work of an artist or group through re-production of original music: The Beatles: Love (2006), Viva Elvis (2010), and Michael Jackson: the Immortal World Tour...
