Erskine, Peter (Clark)

(b Somers Point, NJ, June 5, 1954). American drummer and composer. His performances on more than 500 albums and film scores are a testament to his versatility, stylistic invention, and intuitive musicality. He began playing drums at the age of four, graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy, studied percussion with George Gaber at Indiana University, and was on the road with Stan Kenton in 1972. By the time he was 30, he had already spent three years with Kenton, two with Maynard Ferguson, and four with Weather Report, and worked with Steps and Steps Ahead; he had also recorded as a sideman on more than 75 albums with, among others, Joni Mitchell, George Cables, Jaco Pastorius and his Word of Mouth project, Bob Mintzer, and Bob James, setting new standards for contemporary big band and small group drumming. Other touring and recording credits include Steely Dan, Chick Corea, the BBC and London SOs, John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler, and Diana Krall.
