Cheap Tricklocked

Rock group founded in 1972 in Rockford, Illinois. Its lineup has remained consistent, comprising Robin Zander (b Beloit, WI, 23 Jan 1953; vocals), Rick Nielsen (b Rockford, IL, 22 Dec 1946; electric guitar), Tom Petersson (b Rockford, IL, 9 May 1950; bass), and Bun E. Carlos (Brad Carlson; b Rockford, IL, 12 June 1951; drums). After signing a contract with Epic Records, the band developed a polished style of power pop with punk underpinnings and a modicum of studio effects, suffused with driving riffs and inviting choruses. Cheap Trick played an important role in defining the arena-rock genre. Energetic live shows of the 1970s complemented lyrics that hailed audiences, and idiosyncratic costumes provided image stability while the band explored new musical directions.
