(b Smithfield, VA, April 25, 1949). American mezzo-soprano. She studied singing at Howard University, Washington, DC, and the Juilliard School, and obtained early experience with the Tri-Cities Opera Company in Binghamton, New York. Her widespread American engagements have ranged from Cavalli to Offenbach and include the title role in The Voice of Ariadne (Thea Musgrave) with the New York City Opera, and parts in the American premiere of Tippett’s The Ice Break at Boston (1979) and in Miki’s An Actor’s Revenge at St. Louis, as well as Baroque and Classical repertory. She is particularly well known for her portrayals of Bizet’s Carmen; she also shared the title role in Peter Brook’s production of La tragédie de Carmen in Paris (1982) and on tour abroad.
