(b San Jose, CA, Oct 8, 1925). American mezzo-soprano. She studied in New York and Milan and in Berlin with Margarete Klose. Her debut was at the Oldenburg Landestheater in 1953 as Eboli; she repeated this role for her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1957 and later took 21 other roles in 19 seasons there. Her European career included work in West Berlin, 1955–60, and Hamburg, 1967–71. In 1958 she made her British debut at Covent Garden, singing Ortrud, and the next year sang the Nurse in the first American production of Die Frau ohne Schatten at San Francisco. She had notable success at Bayreuth, first as Ortrud in 1961 and later the same year as the first American Kundry there. She retired to San Jose in 1977, became a professor of voice studies at the University of California, and started a professional company, which in 1984 evolved into Opera San José; its resident company of principal artists presents four productions a season, as well as educational programming, under her artistic direction.
