(b nr Mt. Pisgah, KY, Oct 21, 1921). American old-time fiddler, banjo player, and violin maker. Born and raised on a small farm in Wayne County on the Cumberland Plateau in south central Kentucky, he absorbed a local and regional repertoire of tunes (some dating from the early 1800s) and performance styles from neighbors and family. Starting in his mid-teens, he played for square dances in the Mt. Pisgah region. After infantry service in World War II he moved to Indiana to work in an automobile factory and played the fiddle daily on a 15-minute country-music radio show in Muncie, but decided against a musical career and stopped playing music for 15 years. In 1950 he married Lorene Gregory and in 1957 they returned to Wayne County and bought a farm, where they grew corn and tobacco and raised cattle.
