(b Brooklyn, NY, Sept 4, 1946). American soprano and tenor saxophonist and leader. He studied classical piano and took up saxophone at the age of 12. In the mid-1960s he studied theory and composition with lennie Tristano, saxophone and flute with Charles (F.) Lloyd, and American history at New York University (BA). After working with the fusion group Ten Wheel Drive (1970), he played with Elvin Jones (1971–3) and Miles Davis (1973–4). In 1977 he toured widely with Chick Corea, and from 1978 to 1981 he led the Dave Liebman Quintet, which featured the guitarist John Scofield. In 1981 with the pianist Richie Beirach he formed the quartet Quest, which recorded seven albums during the next decade. In 1989 he founded the International Association of Schools of Jazz, which has helped promote jazz education internationally, especially in Europe.
