Country music duo. Known as the Hayloft Sweethearts, Lulu Belle (Myrtle Eleanor Cooper; b Boone, NC, 24 Dec 1913; d Spruce Pine, NC, 8 Feb 1999) and Scotty (Scott Green Wiseman; b Spruce Pine, NC, 8 Nov 1908; d Gainesville, FL, 31 Jan 1981) were a popular husband-and-wife duo on Chicago WLS’s National Barn Dance (1933–58). Lulu Belle joined WLS as Red Foley’s duet partner in 1932. Under the guidance of John Lair, she modeled her persona after Elviry Weaver’s vaudevillian parodies of the female rube, a continuation of minstrelsy’s wench figure. Attired in gingham dresses with pantaloons showing below the hem and high-top boots, she played the role of the female hillbilly, often challenging gender norms in comedic skits and musical numbers such as “Chewing Chawing Gum” and “I wish I was a single girl again.” In 1936 she became the most popular woman in radio and acquired the title Radio Queen....
