(b Oak Ridge, TN, Nov 24, 1960). American bass player and composer. The son of a prominent bass player and music educator, Edgar Meyer Sr., he was already playing by age five. He continued to study at Indiana University under the tutelage of Stuart Sankey. He possessed both the interest and the virtuosity to play music from a wide range of genres and began collaborating with musicians from many different backgrounds. The result has been a fascinating and rich variety of recordings; among his most frequent collaborators have been Béla Fleck (folk), Yo-Yo Ma (classical), Nickel Creek (bluegrass), and Zakir Hussain (world music). He has also released a number of solo albums that showcase his varied talents as a performer.
