(b Syracuse, NY, 1967). American jazz composer, flutist, ensemble leader, and educator. She entered the University of California at San Diego in 1985 and studied jazz there with the trombonist Jimmy Cheatham and the flutist James Newton. She briefly attended Oberlin College and later received a BA at Chicago State University (1998) and an MA from Northern Illinois University (2000). In 1990 she moved to Chicago, where she met Douglas Ewart and Maia, members of the creative jazz collective the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). She and Maia formed Semana (1995), the first all-female group associated with the AACM. In subsequent years she has formed and worked with a number of different ensembles including Soundscapes, the Black Earth Ensemble, the all-female group Tindanga Mama, Black Earth Strings, and Anthony Braxton’s 12tet.
