(b Chicago, IL, March 14, 1933). American producer, composer, arranger, and musician. Epitomizing a fusion of record production excellence and astute artistic sensibility, he is best known for his success with Michael Jackson. However, he also has remarkable credentials for his creative and commercial consistency with other artists, for his work as a record label executive, and for his own composing and performing career. Few producers have been as well regarded within the music industry or have had such recognition beyond it, and his solo releases have incorporated every major aspect of the African American popular music experience, including hip-hop. By the early 2010s he had won the greatest number of Grammy Awards for a non-classical artist. He has worked with key creative figures spanning generations in the music business.
