(b Sisteron, France, April 23, 1812; d Paris, France, March 14, 1860). French conductor and composer. He was educated at the Paris Conservatoire and in 1836 started conducting dance music at the Jardin Turc. He moved to England in 1838 and began a spectacular career, conducting promenade concerts, balls, and festivals in London and regularly taking his orchestra on provincial tours. In August 1853 he traveled to New York with 27 European instrumental soloists, to which he added more than 60 local musicians. His nightly concerts began at Castle Garden on 29 August; after 48 performances there and at Metropolitan Hall, Jullien took his now-famous orchestra to cities on the East Coast, where its reception was similarly enthusiastic. After an additional month of performances in New York in December, he took a pared-down orchestra, including most of the soloists, on an extended tour as far south as New Orleans and north to Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, and Boston.
