(b Mount Vernon, NY, May 10, 1942). American composer, performer, and critic. Marshall attended Lake Forest College (BA 1964), and then studied musicology with Paul Henry Láng and electronic music with vladimir Ussachevsky at Columbia University (1964–6). He continued working on electronic composition with morton Subotnick at the New York University Composers Workshop (1969–70) and the California Institute of the Arts (MFA 1971), and studied gamelan with K.R.T. Wasitodipura in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 1971. He taught at the California Institute (1970–3) and at Evergreen State College (1985–9) and has been guest professor at the San Francisco Conservatory, Brooklyn College, and Yale University. He has also been active as a producer and a critic and writer on music. Marshall, whose music has been recorded on the Cold Blue, Ibu, New Albion, New World, Nonesuch, and Starkland labels, has received fellowships from the Fulbright, Guggenheim, and Rockefeller foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts, awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and many commissions....
