(b Detroit, MI, Nov 4, 1926). American Composer. He began piano studies with his mother at the age of three, and appeared as a soloist with the Detroit Symphony while still in high school. He studied piano with Sandor Vas and composition with howard Hanson and bernard Rogers at the Eastman School of Music (BM 1947, MM 1951), then traveled to Paris for two years of further study with nadia Boulanger. During the Korean War, Rosenthal enlisted in the Air Force and was assigned to the Documentary Film Squadron, where he composed scores for historical and informational films including a documentary on the history of Russia. After service, he found work on Broadway, composing incidental music for plays (Rashomon, Becket), ballet pieces for musicals (The Music Man), and musicals of his own (Sherry!, based on The Man Who Came to Dinner)....
