(b Los Angeles, CA, June 5, 1940). American composer and pianist. She studied piano from childhood and attended Pomona College to study music. She pursued graduate studies at the University of Kansas and at the University of Southern California where she studied composition with John Pozdro and ingolf Dahl , and piano with John C. Perry.
As a pianist, Mishell taught briefly at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio and concertized throughout the United States and in Mexico, appearing both as a soloist and in various chamber ensembles. She maintained an association with the University of Texas and was recognized with awards for Outstanding Pre-collegiate Teaching from the Texas Music Teacher’s Association for her private studio work. Personable dedication to piano instruction becomes apparent in her amusingly titled three-volume instructional tome, I Want to Quit Piano but My Folks Won’t Let Me (San Diego, 1982).
