(b Natal, Brazil, Sept 30, 1920). Cellist of Brazilian birth. He made his debut at the age of 12 and studied first with his stepfather Thomazzo Babini and then for five years with Iberê Gomes Grosso in Rio de Janeiro. He also studied architectural engineering. He moved to the United States in 1946 to study at Yale University (MA), and the next year made his debut as a soloist with the Boston SO at the Berkshire Music Center; he served as principal cellist of the Pittsburgh SO in the years 1949–50. Since 1948 tours have taken him throughout the United States and to Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. Although he favors suites by Bach and sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms, he has also championed contemporary music and his recordings cover a wide repertory.
