(bTampa, FL, 15 Sept 1928; dGary, IN, 8 Aug 1975). Americanalto saxophonist and bandleader, brother of Nat Adderley. From the age of three he was smitten by jazz, which he heard on radio broadcasts, and at the age of eight he was collecting jazz records. Although he was brought up as an Episcopalian, he regularly listened and danced to gospel music at the weekly fish fry on Sunday nights at the Tabernacle Baptist Church. While in elementary school he played piano, then switched to trumpet and doubled as an alto saxophonist.
