(b Muskogee, OK, April 24, 1922; d Bronx, NY, January 23, 2006). Double bass player and pianist. His mother was a piano teacher. He started on piano, but switched to trumpet and tuba in high school and then to double bass while studying at Xavier University, during which time he worked with several bands in New Orleans. Following service in navy bands (1942–6) he returned to Muskogee and taught music before joining Andy Kirk (1947), with whom he toured to New York. He spent a year with Kirk, then stayed in the city to resume his education at New York University. In the early 1950s he played and recorded with Lucky Millinder, Teddy Wilson (at the Embers), and Lester Young, with whom he toured for two years after having finished this latest round of studies.
