(b Detroit, Dec 9, 1932; d Dover, DE, Feb 4, 2013). American trumpeter, flugelhorn player, and teacher. His studies at Wayne State University (BM 1954) were interrupted by military service (1951–3), during which he played in an air force band. After moving to New York early in 1955, he attended the Manhattan School of Music (MA in music education). In the years 1955 to 1958 he was a favorite studio trumpeter for the labels Savoy (with Kenny Clarke, Ernie Wilkins, Hank Mobley, John Jenkins, and George Wallington), Prestige (with Jackie McLean, Elmo Hope, Phil Woods, Gene Ammons, Art Farmer, Mobley, Art Taylor, Wallington, Red Garland, John Coltrane, and various studio all-star groups), Riverside (with Gigi Gryce, Kenny Drew, and Johnny Griffin), and Blue Note (with Paul Chambers, Horace Silver, Mobley, Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Jimmy Smith, Sonny Clark, Art Blakey, and McLean; from 1959 mainly as a leader).
