(b New York, Sept 5, 1931; d Pennsylvania, June 26, 1956). American pianist, brother of Bud Powell. He studied music at City College, New York, and learned to improvise while practicing at the home of Mary Lou Williams in New York, where musicians often met. After playing with the saxophonists Paul Williams in 1951–2 and Johnny Hodges from 1952 to 1954 he was the pianist and arranger for Clifford Brown’s and Max Roach’s group from 1954 to mid-1956, when he and Brown died in an automobile accident. Powell made a brief appearance with Roach in the film Carmen Jones (1954).
