(b Kansas City, MO, Jan 4, 1922). American flutist and tenor and alto saxophonist. He grew up in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, and in Washington, DC. Having first learned to play alto saxophone, under the strong influence of Lester Young he changed to the tenor instrument. He worked with Blanche Calloway and during World War II served in army bands, then played briefly with Billy Eckstine, Eddie Heywood, Lucky Millinder, and Bullmoose Jackson before returning to Washington.
