(b Philadelphia, July 3, 1947). American violinist and leader. He played piano initially but changed to violin around the age of eight. At West Virginia University (BME 1969) he studied music education, piano, and violin, and during his final year he was inspired by recordings by Ray Nance and Michael White (i) to begin improvising and to take up jazz. After graduating he returned to Philadelphia and began travelling to New York, where he worked at first in small orchestral groups.
