Mehldau, Brad(ford Alexander) (jazz)

(b Jacksonville, FL, Aug 23, 1970). American pianist and leader. He started on piano when he was four and took classical lessons from the age of six into his early teens. His family lived variously in Florida, New York, New Hampshire, and Georgia, then settled in Hartford, Connecticut, when he was ten. From 1988 he had tuition from Junior Mance, Kenny Werner, and Fred Hersch at the New School for Social Research, New York (BFA 1992); he also studied under Jimmy Cobb and later worked in the drummer’s group Cobb’s Mob (from 1991). In the 1990s Mehldau held associations with Jesse Davis (1990–92), Christopher Holyday and Peter Bernstein (both 1991), Steve Davis (iii) (1991–2), Junior Cook (1992), Joshua Redman (1993–4), David Sanchez (1995–6), Toots Thielemans (1998), and Charles Lloyd (1998–9), among others.
