In American and British usage, two household spoons are held firmly in one hand between thumb and index finger and index and middle fingers, with the convex sides facing and slightly separated. The bowls are clacked together by being alternately struck upward against the palm of the other hand and downward on the player’s thigh or knee. To produce a roll, the spoons are brushed across the outspread fingers of the other hand before striking the leg.
