(b Dubois, PA, Sept 19, 1935). American kinetic sculptor and painter. Since 1966 he has invented and performed on instruments and sound sculptures, the best-known of which is the Waterphone (for illustration see Sound sculpture). Other instruments devised by Waters include the Mytar (based on the sitar), Corrugahorns (multi-octave, using two or more corrugated pipes), revolving sound generators (resembling large, pivoted Waterphones, tuned microtonally), water-gong-drums (based on Waterphone-like resonators), and other novel instruments and sound devices.
